Doctor Density and Antibiotic Use...

Updated: Jul 21, 2018

I was watching the news this morning and there was an article about antibiotic use. Here is Australia there is a growing awareness of the dangers of overuse of antibiotics. You can only get them on a prescription and many doctors are becoming more and more reluctant to prescribe them. The news article was mentioned number of countries where you can get antibiotics over the counter at a pharmacy. There is a concern about the global implications of this practice. One of the reasons given was that although the respective governments advise that antibiotics should only be available on prescription there is a lack of doctors. Sometimes the deficit of medical practitioners is filled by local pharmacies who hand out “prescription” medicines without a script. This is one of the reasons we choose “doctor density” as one of the four statistics on Clash of the Countries. The number of doctors in a country and the ability of the people to access the doctors impacts the local population as well as for the rest of the world. The 3rd of the Untied Nations Goal for Sustainability is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all. We hope that as people play our game “Clash of the Countries” there will be many discussions on the implications of the statistics and together we may be able to find innovative and creative solutions to some of the world’s problems.
